Breast cancer affects far too many women each year, and as a result, many undergo mastectomies and breast reconstruction surgeries. Reconstruction may cause muscles to shift without necessarily losing muscle structure and in some cases, mastectomy does not always affect the muscular system. However, there is frequently a reduction in range of motion and muscular strength in the upper limbs following a mastectomy. It is highly recommended to begin exercising eight weeks after the operation, once wounds are fully healed and any unnecessary muscle tension has been avoided.

Pilates is an ideal form of movement practice for recovery and rehabilitation. It is a well-known mind-body exercise that focuses on strengthening the core and stretching muscles to create balance throughout the body. Pilates improves body awareness, coordination, concentration, correct breathing, and posture. It can be practiced during treatment, after the operation, and during the recovery period. In addition to its physical benefits, Pilates can also help psychologically by relieving fears and anxiety, and increasing a sense of well-being and self-confidence.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated every October. The following link provides information on how everyone can make a difference by increasing awareness: www.basipilates.com
